The main expressions of the Gregorian chant are the liturgical recitative, the psalmody, the Holy Mass and the Divine Office. The texts known as accentus are intoned by bishops, by priests or deacons, mainly in a single note, with very simple melodic formulas in certain places of each grammatical sentence. The most complex songs are sung by choirs or soloists who are experts in Gregorian chant. There are many collections of liturgical songs: Graduale Romanum (or also the Graduale Triplex, with the same content but with triple notation), which contains the proper songs and the Ordinary, the Liber usualis, which contains the songs of the extraordinary form of the Mass (Tridentine Mass) and the songs of the Divine Office.
Its origins must be traced in the musical practice of the Jewish synagogue and in the song of the first Christian communities. The name Gregorian chant comes from the fact that its collection is attributed to Pope Gregory the Great, and it is an evolution of the Roman song compared to the Gallican song. It should be clarified and understood that the Gregorian chant was not composed by Pope Gregory I Magno, nor compiled by him. It was from the ninth century when his name began to associate with this musical compendium, especially from the biography of John the Deacon.
